The first coin on Ethereum was GavCoin.
Bitcoin's era got a dog. Ethereum got Gavcoin.
Not our words. Its creator said it on stage, before Ethereum had even launched. He wrote the coin, named it after himself and put his own face on the front. No committee, no roadmap, no mascot contest. Just a guy, a laptop and a very confident selfie. It's the Dogecoin of Ethereum, except it was actually there first.
Vitalik said let a thousand cryptocurrencies bloom. Lovely. Someone still had to plant the first one, and GavCoin was it, selfie and all.
Straight from the man himself
Proof-of-Concept V. GavCoin's creator is walking a room full of very early Ethereum people through the new client, Vitalik's face is on the projector for reasons nobody explained, and then he says it. Eleven seconds. Press play.
"...we've also got a coin front, and the first coin in fact to be implemented in Ethereum."
Of course Ethereum posted it too
Same client, April 2014. The official account shows off its shiny new web integration, and the very first thing running in it is a coin with its creator's face on. That coin was GavCoin. You couldn't make this up.

Doge was the meme of Bitcoin's era. A dog, a joke, and somehow one of the biggest coins on earth. Ethereum never got its Doge. Except it did, in 2014, and it was called GavCoin. We're just late to noticing.
So the goal is simple and completely unhinged: one Gavcoin worth one Dogecoin. Very far. Much ambition. Wow.

The paper trail,
straight from 2014
Every part of the story is out there to check: on GitHub, on video and on Ethereum's own Twitter. Go look, we'll wait.
Exhibit A: the code
Ethereum's official repo of example apps is called dapp-bin. In it there's a file called coin.sol, and inside that is a contract called GavCoin, ticker GAV. Still there to this day. Nobody's had the heart to delete it.
Exhibit B: "bring on the tokens"
2015. Someone puts the GavCoin face on a conference slide under an "I heard you like tokens" meme, with Vitalik's "let a thousand cryptocurrencies bloom" at the bottom. The reply from GavCoin's creator is the most 2015 tweet ever written:
"lulz. Bring on the #ethereum tokens"
The pitch, from someone who's
thought about this way too much
It was actually first
Every coin is the first something. First dog on a new chain, first frog in a hat. This one's the first first. It was written before the token standard existed. Pretty hard to top.
Gavcoin is our Doge
Bitcoin's era got a shiba. Ethereum got a coin with a man's face on it, made by that man. Most memecoins spend a week arguing over the logo. Ours was sorted in 2014.
GavCoin started with 296
The original contract handed its creator 79,228,162,514,264,337,593,543,933,952 GAV. That's more coins than there are grains of sand on Earth, by a very long way. Zero chill. Total legend.
Go on, do the maths
It uses the live price, so the starting number is real. The ending number is up to the group chat.
